In an unexpected turn of events, a 22-year-old murder accused hurled a slipper at a judge during a court hearing in Thane district on Monday. The incident occurred after the accused, Kiran Santosh Bharam, expressed frustration over the absence of his lawyer.
According to sources, Bharam appeared before District and Additional Sessions Judge RG Waghmare to request a transfer of his case to another court. The judge advised him to file a formal application through his lawyer. However, when Bharam’s lawyer failed to appear, the court instructed him to appoint a new lawyer and scheduled another hearing date.
Frustrated with the proceedings, Bharam reportedly threw a slipper towards Judge Waghmare, which struck a wooden frame near the dais. While the judge remained unharmed, the incident caused a stir in the courtroom.
Following the act, an FIR was lodged against Bharam under Sections 132 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of duty) and 125 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Court officials condemned the incident, stating, “This is a serious violation of courtroom decorum and an attack on the judicial process. Any such act of aggression will be met with strict legal consequences.”
Legal experts have pointed out that such behavior could have significant repercussions for Bharam’s ongoing murder trial. “Contempt towards the judiciary undermines the very fabric of justice and can adversely impact the accused’s defense,” a senior advocate remarked.
The court has emphasized the importance of maintaining order and respect in legal proceedings. Bharam’s case, already under scrutiny, now faces additional challenges due to his actions. Further investigations are underway, and the judiciary is expected to take decisive action against this breach of decorum.
