In a unique form of punishment, a local court in Jammu and Kashmir’s Bhaderwah has sentenced a man to three days of community service at a cow shelter after he was found guilty of creating a public nuisance while intoxicated.
Sub-judge Madhu Sharma of the Judicial Magistrate First Class, Bhaderwah, passed the order on March 19, directing the convict, Bikram Singh, to clean the Shri Gomata Seva Samiti Dhamunder Bhaderwah cow shelter for three hours daily from March 24 to March 26.
“Accused is convicted and is sentenced to undergo Community Service of cleaning at Shri Gomata Seva Samiti Dhamunder Bhaderwah for 03 days with effect from 24.03.2025 to 26.03.2025 daily for 03 hours from 11:00 AM to 02:00 PM. The convict will complete his sentence under the supervision of SHO P/S Bhaderwah,” the court stated in its order.
Singh was booked under Section 355 of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) after police found him in an intoxicated state, creating a nuisance near Nalthi Naka on March 18. When the case was presented before the court, Singh pleaded guilty.
“The plea of the guilt of the accused is recorded in the open court; same is read over to the accused. The accused admits the same as true and correct. In my considered opinion, the accused has confessed voluntarily and is not under any threat, promise or undue influence,” the court noted.
To ensure compliance, the court directed the supervising police officer to submit a report, along with photographs of Singh performing the community service, by April 3.
Advocate Mohd. Majid Malik represented Singh in the case.
