National Law University Delhi (NLU Delhi) has appointed former Chief Justice of India, Dr Justice DY Chandrachud, as a Distinguished Professor, marking a major step forward in the institution’s academic and research aspirations in constitutional law.
As part of this collaboration, NLU Delhi will establish a Centre for Constitutional Studies with Justice Chandrachud steering its research direction. The Centre is poised to become a hub for cutting-edge scholarship on constitutional morality, transformative constitutionalism, and judicial interpretation of rights—areas that were pivotal during Chandrachud’s tenure on the Supreme Court bench.
Welcoming the development, NLU Delhi Vice-Chancellor Prof GS Bajpai said:
“Justice Chandrachud’s legacy in constitutional morality, transformative constitutionalism, and dynamic interpretation of fundamental rights offers unparalleled empirical and doctrinal material for academic inquiry.”
In addition to the Centre, NLU Delhi will also launch a flagship lecture series titled ‘In the Spirit of Justice: The DYC Distinguished Lecture Series’, beginning in July 2025. The series will explore key landmark judgments authored by the 50th Chief Justice of India on issues ranging from privacy and LGBTQ+ rights to digital freedoms, gender justice, and judicial reforms—discussed through his own perspective.
With this initiative, NLU Delhi aims to significantly enrich its research ecosystem and become a leading force in constitutional studies in India.
