“Tu hai kya cheez… bahar mil, dekhte hai kaise zinda ghar jaati hai” — shocking threats hurled at Judicial Magistrate in Delhi courtroom
In a deeply disturbing incident at a Delhi court, a convict and his lawyer allegedly abused, threatened, and attempted to intimidate Judicial Magistrate (NI Act) Shivangi Mangla following a conviction in a cheque bounce case. The accused not only hurled expletives and threats at the judge in open court but also tried to throw an object at her after she convicted him under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act.
The courtroom witnessed chaos after the judge directed the convict to furnish bail bonds under Section 437A of the CrPC on the next date of hearing. Instead of complying, the accused and his advocate, Atul Kumar, reportedly launched into a tirade against the judge, pressuring her to resign and threatening dire consequences if the judgment was not altered.
As recorded in the order dated April 2, the accused lashed out at the judge, saying:
“Tu hai kya cheez ………….ki tu bahar mil dekhte hai kaise zinda ghar jaati hai…….. (Who even are you… just meet me outside and let’s see how you make it back home alive).”
Judge Mangla noted that the accused also instructed his lawyer to “do whatever it takes” to reverse the judgment. The situation escalated as both the convict and his counsel harassed the judge further, demanding acquittal and even threatening to file a false complaint to force her resignation.
Undeterred, the judge made it clear that she would not be intimidated:
“Still the undersigned stands against all the odds and always does needful in favor of justice. The undersigned shall be taking appropriate measures against the accused before National Commission for Women, Delhi for such threatening and harassment,” the court order reads.
In addition to initiating action before the National Commission for Women, the judge has also issued a show cause notice to advocate Atul Kumar, asking him to explain his conduct and justify why criminal contempt proceedings should not be initiated against him:
“Court notice be issued to counsel for accused Sh. Atul Kumar to show cause in writing providing relevant explanation for the conduct shown by him today and further to explain as to why he shall not be referred to the Hon’ble High Court for initiating criminal contempt proceedings against him for such misbehavior.”
The lawyer has been directed to submit his response by the next date of hearing.
This alarming episode has raised serious concerns over the safety of judicial officers, especially women judges, and underscores the urgent need for stronger protection mechanisms within court premises.
