A Kolkata court on Friday granted bail to Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former Principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, in connection with the rape and murder of a resident doctor earlier this year. The court also granted bail to police officer Abhijit Mondal.
The decision was based on the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) failing to file a chargesheet within the mandated 90-day period, as per the Hindustan Times. However, Ghosh will remain incarcerated due to a separate case concerning alleged financial irregularities during his tenure at RG Kar Medical College.
Allegations and Arrest
Dr. Ghosh’s legal troubles began following the horrific rape and murder incident at RG Kar Medical College in August, which triggered nationwide protests and condemnation. Allegations surfaced regarding his mishandling of evidence in the case, along with accusations of financial misconduct.
On August 23, the Calcutta High Court directed the CBI to investigate these allegations. This came after a plea from Akhtar Ali, the former Deputy Superintendent of RG Kar Hospital, who alleged “serious illegalities” committed by Ghosh during his term as Principal.
Dr. Ghosh was arrested on September 2 following the High Court order. Attempts to challenge the High Court directive in the Supreme Court were dismissed on September 6.
Backlash Against State Decisions
Dr. Ghosh has faced significant criticism for his handling of the rape case, including allegations of victim-blaming, which led to his resignation as Principal. However, the State’s subsequent decision to appoint him as Principal of another college sparked outrage.
The Calcutta High Court sharply criticised this move, describing it as a “reward” for his resignation. The court remarked that such decisions send a damaging message, particularly in cases involving grave misconduct.
Police Officer Granted Bail
Police officer Abhijit Mondal, who was also under investigation in connection with the case, will be released from custody following the bail order.
Financial Irregularities Case
While Dr. Ghosh has been granted bail in the CBI’s rape and murder investigation due to procedural delays, he will remain in custody for the alleged financial irregularities case at RG Kar Medical College.
The case continues to unfold as Dr. Ghosh’s tenure comes under intense scrutiny, with critics calling for stronger accountability measures within institutional leadership.
